Hello! As of 11/08: I'm a non-traditional student who wanted to teach art, until No Child Left Behind dashed that dream.
My educational goals are still malleable; as I encounter new fields of study, I am tailoring much of it to my ultimate goal: a mobile art program that utilizes digital technology to bring the development of creative intelligence and critical thinking to schools which have lost the funding/freedom for this vital aspect of student development. Rather than going the route of getting a degree in secondary education, I have decided to pursue Publishing as a major, as grant writing will be a key skill for attaining backing. After getting a degree in Publishing (with a focus on New Media) I will apply to grad school, and if I am still sane enough, I will head in the direction of a Phd. The plan: gain the skills needed to teach at the collegiate level. It's complicated. Questions? Ask!
Planning the wedding is full steam ahead right now. We've spent days going from appointment to appointment until we feel like our heads are spinning! The good news: the wedding cake is pretty much set up. We paid one lady a deposit, however, one of my co-workers does cakes and has offered to make ours for about 1/3 of the cost. We like that, since we are a college/grad student budget! It means more money for other details, like garb and the photographer. We made the deposit on our location; we're doing the short-and-sweet ceremony and reception in one location. The era of the building and the interiors will go well with the *steampunk theme of the wedding. centralstation.cc/banquet/index.html[centralstation.cc/banquet/index.html]
Some background for new comers or those who may have missed my first post about my upcoming wedding in Oct (*see links at bottom or poke around my blog for a better understanding of terminology you may not be familiar with)...
My love and I are, by nature, unconventional people. We cringe at the thought of the typical wedding. Hate the clothes, hate the stuffiness of the traditions, hate the standard boring pictures. We're old *rivetheads who teetered on the edge of goth in our youth. We are in love with all things steampunk. As he summed it up for a friend recently, think Charles Dickens with ray guns. :D We're both huge sci-fi fans.
We love eras when dress clothes had more flair. White dress for me? Pffffft! Think again! I'm meeting with a costume designer next week to figure out what I need her to make. The rough sketch I have in my head involves a pseudo bustle skirt. I know I'll need an under-bust corset. The blouse will be simple and not too frilly. I have my eye on a marabou shawl that mimics the style caplets worn around the turn of the (1900's) century. I am *definitely* getting a fan with peacock feathers and providing marabou fans for the single bridesmaid and best person. My colors will be pulled from that fan. I'm thinking of using that deep, rich blue for the dominant color of my dress. My flowers are to be the deeper orange with splashes of yellows.
A quick bit about what else different about this event. He's having a best-person instead of a man. She's a mutual friend of the past three years, whom we met through our EQ2 guild. She's coming all the way from NJ and bringing her kids. We know the kids too and think of ourselves as their virtual aunt and uncle.
We're asking our guests to come in costume if at all possible. We plan to provide some guidance to make it easier, including links to easy steampunk-esqe garb. I'm excited to say that my father is at least willing to get in the spirit of things. Not surprising if you knew him. Once upon a time my parents came to visit me while I was working as a makeup artist and receptionist for a Chicago photographer; he asked if he could take photos...which resulted in this...
(Ma looking a bit shy, but you can certainly tell I'm my father's daughter personality-wise)
Anywhoooo...more on this later I'm sure. Some handy-dandy links in the meantime:
